Are electronic signatures legal in the UAE?

Yes. Electronic signatures are legally recognised and enforceable in the United Arab Emirates for the vast majority of commercial transactions, under Federal Decree-Law No. 46 of 2021 on Electronic Transactions and Trust Services. This guide explains the law in plain English, how SignLab satisfies its requirements, and which documents still require a handwritten signature.

This page is general information, not legal advice. SignLab is not a law firm. For documents with significant legal or financial consequences, consult a qualified lawyer licensed in the UAE.

The law that governs e-signatures in the UAE

The UAE’s framework is Federal Decree-Law No. 46 of 2021 on Electronic Transactions and Trust Services, which came into force in 2022 and replaced the earlier Electronic Commerce and Transactions Law (Federal Law No. 1 of 2006). The 2021 law modernised the UAE’s approach and introduced a trust-services regime broadly comparable to international frameworks such as the EU’s eIDAS.

Under the law, an electronic signature is not denied legal effect simply because it is electronic. For most commercial agreements — service contracts, NDAs, engagement letters, quotes and approvals — a Simple Electronic Signature with a reliable audit trail is sufficient and enforceable.

SignLab produces Simple Electronic Signatures (SES). SES is valid for the vast majority of UAE commercial documents. SignLab does not currently issue Advanced (AES) or Qualified (QES) signatures — some regulated or high-value transactions may require those, so check with a UAE-licensed lawyer if you are unsure.

What makes an e-signature enforceable

UAE law looks for the same core elements recognised in most jurisdictions:

1

Intent to sign

The signer clearly intends to sign. SignLab requires each signer to actively draw or confirm a signature and click to agree.

2

Consent to transact electronically

All parties agree to do business electronically. SignLab’s signing flow includes a clear disclosure the signer must accept.

3

Reliable link to the document

The signature is bound to the document and tamper-evident. SignLab cryptographically seals every signed PDF and embeds the audit trail.

UAE documents that still need wet ink

Certain document types are excluded from electronic execution under UAE law. Do not use SignLab for:

  • Real-estate transfer deeds and title transactions (typically registered with the relevant land department)
  • Wills and testamentary documents
  • Powers of attorney (often require notarisation — verify before use)
  • Personal-status documents such as marriage and divorce
  • Court documents and notarised instruments

This list is not exhaustive. If you are unsure whether an electronic signature is valid for your document, consult a UAE-licensed lawyer.

How SignLab meets the law’s requirements

Every document signed through SignLab carries the evidence needed to stand behind a signature:

  • A tamper-evident PDF sealed with a SHA-256 hash, so any later change is detectable
  • A full audit trail — sent, viewed and signed events, each with a UTC timestamp
  • IP address and device captured at every event
  • A QR code on every signed PDF linking to a public verification page
  • A Certificate of Completion you can download and share with counterparties
